Funding for PhD students is provided by Immanuel-Kant-Stipendium and the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds.
The Immanuel-Kant-Stipendium provides funding for doctoral students who are studying transnational and transcultural relationships in Eastern Europe, particularly with respect to the German-speaking population. Applications can be submitted to the Federal Institute for Culture and History of the Germans in Eastern Europe (BKGE).
Requirements for applicants include the following:
- projects in the areas of history and politics, European ethnology, art history, literary and language history, migration research, and social science will be considered
- the regional focus is placed on the historic East Prussian provinces and the German settlement areas in Eastern, Eastern-Central, and South-Eastern Europe
- doctorate at a German university or affiliation to a German university
- applications can be submitted either by candidates themselves or by their supervising tutors at a German university
The main scholarship benefits are as follows:
- monthly stipend of 1,550 euros for a period of two years (Scholarships are subject to availability of funds.)
- additional allowances for a spouse, children, and study abroad
The closing date for applications is 31 December 2020; the scholarship period begins on 1 July 2021.

Are you doing a PhD in the area of basic biomedical research and would like to pursue your ambitious, experimental project in an internationally leading laboratory? Then apply for a PhD fellowship of up to three and a half years from the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds.
The application process is highly competitive, and the funding – both financial and non-material – is extensive.
Requirements for applicants include the following:
- an ambitious scientific PhD project in the area of basic biomedical research
- outstanding achievements of the applicant as well as corresponding scientific quality of the PhD project and laboratory
The main scholarship benefits are as follows:
- monthly stipend;
- additional funding for participation in international scientific conferences, practical courses, and laboratory cooperations;
- family allowances;
- personal support for fellows and alumni, tailor-made scientific seminars, and communication training
the extensive and lively network of fellows and alumni; - maximum funding duration: three and a half years.
The deadlines for applications are 1 February, 1 June, and 1 October each year.
